About Gentle Sort

We make a tool for one of the hardest jobs a family does: deciding together what happens to the things someone left behind.

Why we built it

When someone dies, their family is left with a house full of belongings and no clear way to divide them. Who gets what? How do you make it fair? How do you even know what’s there?

Most families get by with sticky notes, spreadsheets and awkward phone calls. Things get missed, feelings get hurt, and a job that should bring people together pushes them apart.

Family treasures: gold filigree earrings held in a hand, a green china tureen, a marble bust of a young woman and a gilded platter

It started with our own family

Gentle Sort began with a real estate: more than 1,000 items in 30 categories, including furniture, paintings, rugs, jewelry, china and silver, divided between two households.

We needed more than a spreadsheet. We needed a place where everyone could look at their own pace, write down what they remembered, say what mattered to them, and work through the overlaps in the open.

What we care about

  • It has to work for everyone

Including grandparents who don’t like computers. Large text, plain words, nothing hidden.

  • Start to finish

From the first photo to the last report for the accountant, so the family doesn’t juggle five tools.

  • Everyone sees the same thing

Shared wishes are visible, decisions are written down, and every change is in the history.
